The arrival of Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) first Embraer E190 aircraft is significant for Ghana’s domestic aviation industry. The 102-seater aircraft, which arrived in Ghana on September 19, 2026, more than doubles the seating capacity of AWA’s 50-seat ERJ-145 aircraft. AWA says the E190 is the first of a planned fleet expansion that could eventually grow to 10 aircraft.
More Seats

For the traveller, the most immediate difference is simple: more seats.
With 102 passengers accommodated on the new E190 compared with about 50 on the aircraft AWA has traditionally operated, there is potential for more people to secure seats on flights where demand is high. That matters to the businessperson travelling to Kumasi for a meeting, the student heading home to Tamale, the family visiting relatives, or the traveller simply choosing to connect to other regions by air rather than spending hours on the road.
AWA currently connects Accra with destinations including Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale, while its wider network extends into West Africa. Travellers can view AWA’s current destinations and routes when planning their journeys.

More capacity does not automatically mean that every flight will have an available seat, but it gives the airline greater room to serve passenger demand.
And sometimes, that extra seat is more than a number. It is a missed meeting that can now happen, a family visit that becomes possible, or a traveller who no longer has to postpone a journey simply because the flight was full.
Could This Make Domestic Air Travel More Affordable? This is perhaps one of the biggest questions on travellers’ minds.
The arrival of a larger aircraft could help ease capacity constraints on routes where demand is strong. When more seats are available, passengers have a better chance of finding space instead of facing sold-out flights and having to consider more expensive or less convenient alternatives.
However, the E190 itself does not guarantee cheaper tickets. Airfares are influenced by several factors, including operational costs, demand, taxes, fuel and other expenses.
Making Ghana Easier to Explore

Air connectivity is not only about getting from Accra to another city. It is about what becomes possible once those connections exist.
A traveller arriving in Ghana for business, education, family commitments or leisure may want to continue to another part of the country. For someone unfamiliar with Ghana, the thought of leaving the airport and beginning a long road journey to another region can be daunting.
A stronger domestic aviation network provides another option.
With AWA's network serving cities such as Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale, travellers can consider connecting by air to different parts of Ghana rather than automatically relying on long road journeys.
For international travellers, this also strengthens Accra's role as a gateway into Ghana. AWA maintains partnerships with international airlines including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airways, Kenya Airways and RwandAir to facilitate connections through Accra. AWA provides more information on its international connections and airline partnerships here.

The result could be a Ghana that feels a little smaller not geographically, but in terms of how easy it is to move around.

A Bigger Aircraft, A Bigger Opportunity
The arrival of AWA's first E190 will not solve every challenge facing Ghana's domestic aviation sector. Ticket prices, flight schedules, route availability and operating costs will continue to matter.
But it does create something important: additional capacity and room for growth.
For the traveller, that could mean more opportunities to fly, fewer battles for limited seats and easier connections between Accra and other parts of Ghana.
And perhaps that is the most meaningful part of this development.
